cPanel is a web-based control panel that lets you manage your hosting account with clicks instead of commands. It is the most widely used panel in shared hosting, and SyllHost accounts use it.
What can you do in cPanel?
- File Manager: upload, edit and organise your website files.
- Email Accounts: create addresses like info@yourdomain. See the email guide.
- Domains: add extra domains, subdomains and redirects.
- Databases: create MySQL databases and users.
- SSL/TLS: manage HTTPS certificates. See this guide.
- Backup: download copies of your site. See backup guide.
- Auto installer: install WordPress and other apps. See install WordPress.
How to log in
Use the cPanel link and credentials in your welcome email, or log in to the client area. Keep your password private and use a strong one.
First things to do
- Check that your domain points to the hosting.
- Enable HTTPS.
- Install WordPress or upload your site.
- Create your business email.
- Take a first backup.
A tour of the cPanel home screen
cPanel groups features into sections. Files contains File Manager, Backup and FTP accounts. Databases has MySQL Databases and phpMyAdmin. Domains lets you add domains and subdomains and manage redirects. Email includes Email Accounts, forwarders and deliverability tools. Security holds password-protected directories, IP blocking and SSL/TLS. Software includes PHP version selection and installers. Use the search box at the top to find any tool quickly.
File Manager basics
Your website files live in a folder called public_html for the main domain. Anything in that folder is public. Upload a file named index.html or index.php there and it becomes your homepage. Never store backups or sensitive data in public folders, because anyone who guesses the address can download them.
Databases and phpMyAdmin
Dynamic sites like WordPress store content in a MySQL database. In cPanel you create a database, create a user, and give that user access. phpMyAdmin lets you view and export the database. Be careful there: deleting tables or editing rows without a backup can break your site.
Choosing a PHP version
Under the PHP selector you can choose which PHP version your site uses. Newer versions are faster and more secure, but older themes and plugins may not work with them. Test after changing and keep a backup. See speed tips.
Staying safe in cPanel
- Use a unique, long password and change it if you shared it with a developer.
- Delete FTP and email accounts you no longer use.
- Never click unknown links asking for your cPanel login.
- Review the "Last login" information occasionally.
