What Is a Hosting Reseller API and How Does It Work?

If you sell hosting or domains to customers, doing every order by hand does not scale. A reseller API lets your own software place orders, check prices and read order status automatically.

API in plain English

An API (application programming interface) is a set of web addresses (endpoints) that another program can call to ask for information or to perform an action. You send a request, usually in JSON, and get a JSON answer back. No browser or manual clicking is needed.

What a hosting reseller API does

With the SyllHost Reseller API your system can:

  • Read your account, balance and available spend.
  • List hosting plans and domain prices, already showing your reseller price.
  • Check whether a domain is available.
  • Order hosting and register or transfer domains for your customers.
  • List your orders, services, domains and invoices, and pay renewal invoices.
  • Set a new cPanel password for a service.

How the money works

You top up an account balance. Each API order is paid from that balance at your reseller price, in one step. If the balance (minus your required minimum) cannot cover the order, nothing is created and nothing is charged. Read how prepaid balance billing works.

Who needs a reseller API?

FreelancerOrder and track client services from a script.

What it does not do yet

To keep expectations honest: cancelling services, changing plans, DNS and nameserver changes for domains, domain transfer-out and webhooks are handled by our team for now. You can poll the API to follow the status of orders and domains.

How to start

  1. Ask us to enable API access on your account.
  2. Add funds to your balance.
  3. Create a key in your client area, optionally limited to your server's IP.
  4. Make your first call. See the quick start.

API vs control panel: when to use each

A control panel is perfect for occasional manual work: one customer here, one change there. An API shines when the same task repeats: every new client needs hosting, every invoice needs a domain, every signup needs an account. If you place fewer than a handful of orders a month, manual ordering is fine. If orders arrive continuously or from your own website, automation pays for itself quickly in time saved and mistakes avoided.

What a typical integration looks like

  1. Your checkout collects the customer's details and payment.
  2. Your server checks the domain with the API and calculates your price.
  3. After the customer pays you, your server places the order with the API.
  4. You store the order number and service id and show the customer their status.
  5. You email the customer, or set a fresh cPanel password through the API and send it securely.

Keep it simple at first

Start with read-only calls: account, products, domain check. When those work, add one ordering flow and test it with a small purchase. Add polling and reporting last.

FAQ

Do I need to be a programmer?

Basic programming helps. Our guide has copy-paste examples in curl, PHP and Python.

Is there a test mode?

Not yet. Orders are real and charged from your balance, so test with small purchases.

Build with our API: read the Reseller API reference and the step-by-step guide. API access is enabled per account, so contact us to request it.
