How to Become a Domain Reseller: Step-by-Step Guide

Domains are an excellent product to resell: customers need them, they renew every year and each one is a natural lead for hosting and email.

How domain reselling works

  1. Your provider registers domains at wholesale price.
  2. You sell them to your customers at your price.
  3. The domain is registered in the customer's name (they are the registrant).
  4. Each year the domain must be renewed, which creates repeat revenue.

Step 1: Get reseller access

Ask for a reseller account with domain access. With SyllHost, API access is enabled per customer and domain prices are shown at your reseller price. See the API reference.

Step 2: Understand your price list

Call GET /domains/tlds to see registration, renewal and transfer prices for each extension. Prices differ by extension, so build a price table for your customers. Our platform never sells domains below cost to you.

Step 3: Set your margin

A small fixed margin per domain (for example $2 to $4) keeps you competitive. Remember renewals are billed at the price you bought at, so make sure your renewal price still has margin. Read pricing for resellers.

Step 4: Collect correct owner details

Registries require accurate registrant data: name, email, phone, address, city, postcode and country. Wrong data can lead to suspension. Explain to customers why you ask. See WHOIS privacy.

Step 5: Let customers search

Add a domain search to your website using GET /domains/check. Learn how in how to register domains via API.

Step 6: Upsell hosting and email

Every domain sale is a chance to offer hosting, business email and SSL. Customers who already trust you for the domain convert easily.

Step 7: Manage renewals

Renewal invoices are created before the due date and, with auto-renew on, paid from your balance. Keep your balance funded. Remind your customers before expiry. See what happens when a domain expires.

Profit example

If your wholesale price for a .com registration is $11.40 and you sell at $14.00, you earn $2.60 on the registration and again on every renewal at the price you bought. Fifty domains give about $130 gross per year from domains alone, plus the hosting and email you sell alongside. Domains are low margin but highly sticky: customers rarely move a domain they use for email.

Compliance basics

  • Registrant data must be accurate. Do not register domains with fake details.
  • Respect trademarks. Refuse to register names that obviously copy a known brand.
  • Keep a record of who ordered what and when.
  • Tell customers about renewal prices and dates upfront.

Packaging

Bundle a domain with a hosting plan and business email as one "Get online" package. Customers understand the value, and you earn on three products with one sale.

FAQ
