You can move a domain from one registrar to another to simplify billing or get better service. Done properly, your website and email keep working.
Check eligibility
- The domain is more than 60 days old (ICANN rule for most extensions).
- It was not transferred in the last 60 days.
- It is not expired or in redemption.
Step by step
- Back up your DNS records. Write down all A, MX, CNAME and TXT records.
- Unlock the domain at your current registrar.
- Disable WHOIS privacy temporarily if the registrar requires it, and make sure the registrant email is valid.
- Get the authorisation (EPP) code.
- Start the transfer with the new registrar and pay for the transfer, which usually adds a year to the registration.
- Approve the transfer via the email you receive, or wait for automatic approval (commonly up to 5 days).
- Check DNS after completion and re-enable privacy.
Avoid downtime
Keep the same nameservers during the transfer. Only change them when everything is stable. See pointing a domain.
Is a transfer required to use my host?
No. You can simply change nameservers. Compare registrars in how to choose a registrar.
Why people transfer domains
- Lower renewal prices.
- Better support or a clearer interface.
- To manage domain and hosting in one account.
- To consolidate many domains from different providers.
Understanding the authorisation code (EPP code)
The authorisation code is a unique password for your domain. The new registrar uses it to prove you are allowed to move the name. Keep it private, since anyone with the code and an unlocked domain can start a transfer. Many registrars generate a new code on request and show it in the control panel, or email it to the registrant.
What can block a transfer
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Domain locked | Disable registrar lock |
| Less than 60 days since registration or last transfer | Wait until the period ends |
| Wrong authorisation code | Request a new one |
| Registrant email unreachable | Update the email and verify it |
| Domain expired or in redemption | Renew first |
| Privacy service hides the contact | Temporarily disable or confirm the proxy email |
After the transfer
- Check that nameservers and DNS records are the same as before.
- Confirm your website and email work.
- Re-enable privacy and registrar lock.
- Set auto-renewal with the new registrar.
- Update your records of where the domain is.
If you only want to connect your domain to hosting, see nameserver instructions.
